Pantaenius links anchor monitoring to 50% deductible reduction

New policy provision recognises professionally installed continuous anchor monitoring systems, including AnchorGuardian.

From September 2026, Pantaenius will reduce the deductible by 50 per cent on claims for collision, stranding or grounding where the loss results from an anchor slipping or coming loose from the seabed. This provision only applies where the yacht had a technically functional anchor monitoring system in place at the time of the incident, installed by a specialist company, continuously monitoring GPS data and, at a minimum, movement data from a sensor attached to the anchor or its chain.

AnchorGuardian is named as an example in the policy wording.

The change is a practical example of how professionally installed loss prevention technology can be reflected directly in yacht insurance terms. It recognises the additional visibility that continuous monitoring can give captains and crew during one of the most routine, but potentially consequential, operations on board.

A practical approach to loss prevention

“Anchoring decisions are made on board and good seamanship remains fundamental. However, where technology gives crews clearer information and earlier warning, we believe it is right to recognise that within the policy wording,” said Phillip Harstrick, Head of Underwriting at Pantaenius “This provision reflects Pantaenius’ practical approach to loss prevention. It supports captains and crews with technology that can help them see risk developing and act before an incident escalates, while keeping professional judgement and a proper anchor watch central.”

Installed directly at the anchor, AnchorGuardian provides real-time information on anchor position, movement, chain behaviour and load. Rather than inferring anchor behaviour from vessel movement alone, the system is designed to provide crews with objective data and early warning of developing movement below the surface.

Thomas Frizlen, Founder of Swiss Ocean Tech, said: “Pantaenius deserves real recognition for taking this step. They are looking beyond what has traditionally been done and asking how better information can help manage risk more effectively. Anchoring is still an area where surprisingly little objective information is available, even though the consequences when something goes wrong can be significant. Recognising anchor monitoring within their insurance terms is a very positive move, and one that I believe helps take the whole industry forward. We are pleased that AnchorGuardian can play a part in bringing more visibility and better information into that conversation.”

What the provision covers

The 50 per cent reduction applies to the deductible stated in the policy schedule for the defined categories of claim only. It is a deductible reduction, not a premium discount. Questions about scope, eligibility or individual policy wording should be directed to Pantaenius.

The change does not replace the responsibilities of the captain, crew or owner, or established anchor watch procedures. Safe anchoring continues to depend on preparation, professional judgement and vigilance.
