GoBoat expands into electric conversions as demand for cleaner boating grows

GoBoat is expanding its role in the UK marine sector with the launch of an electric boat conversion service, as demand for more sustainable boating continues to grow.

Operating a fully electric fleet of 57 boats across four UK locations, GoBoat has established a new capability at its Thames Ditton Boatyard, enabling private boat owners to transition from petrol to electric propulsion. The move builds on the company’s operational experience and reflects a wider shift across the leisure marine market.

Julian Wootton at GoBoat, said: “We’ve always believed electric is the future of boating, not just from a sustainability perspective, but in the overall experience it delivers. Running a fully electric fleet has given us a clear understanding of what works in practice. Expanding into conversions allows us to bring that expertise directly to boat owners.”

The new service supports the conversion of existing vessels using proven electric propulsion systems, helping owners reduce maintenance, remove fuel handling, and benefit from quieter, more efficient operation.

GoBoat’s partnership with Yamaha and Torqeedo has been central to this development. Torqeedo’s electric propulsion systems power the company’s fleet, providing the reliability required for high-frequency commercial use, while also underpinning the new conversion offering.

Julian added: “Consistency and reliability are critical, whether you’re operating a fleet or supporting private owners. Working with Torqeedo and Yamaha allows us to deliver both. We’re seeing a clear shift, with boat owners increasingly looking to future-proof their vessels, and electric becoming a far more viable and attractive option.”

The expansion comes amid growing interest in electric propulsion, driven by environmental considerations, rising fuel costs, and changing customer expectations. GoBoat says its experience on the water is already influencing behaviour, with more users actively seeking out eco-friendly leisure options.

At Thames Ditton Boatyard, GoBoat will continue to service its own fleet while supporting external customers looking to modernise their vessels. While petrol engines remain part of the wider market, the company’s long-term focus is firmly on electric.
