National D-Day 80 Commemorative Event in Portsmouth in Pictures

The Ministry of Defence hosted the UK’s National commemorative event for the 80th anniversary for D-Day on Southsea Common in Portsmouth.

HM The King, the Prime Minister, special guests, members of the public and hundreds of local schoolchildren attended the spectacular cultural commemoration, which was broadcast live on BBC One. The official UK commemorations comprised a national commemorative event in Portsmouth and a vigil at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Bayeux War Cemetery on 5 June, as well as services at the cemetery and at Bayeux Cathedral. On 6 June, The King and President Macron gathered at the British Normandy Memorial to mark the 80th anniversary.

The RAF Red Arrows performed a flypast over Portsmouth for the D-Day 80th anniversary. The Royal Air Force Aerobatic display team were joined by the Typhoon display pilot, Flight Lieutenant David ‘Turbo’ Turnbull in his Typhoon FGR4 as the Red Arrows led the flypast over the city for all to see.

His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen on 5th June, the date that many soldiers set off from Portsmouth, an event on Southsea Common saw thousands of members of the public join D-Day veterans and VIP guests to mark the anniversary.

A Household Divison Drummer on 5th June, as thousands of members of the public join D-Day veterans and VIP guests to mark the anniversary. The Normandy Landings were the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The invasion, codenamed Operation Neptune, was a combined naval, land and air assault on Nazi-occupied France.
