UK boat owners urged to take extra precautions as claims reach annual peak

Analysis from Insure4Boats has revealed when boat owners are most likely to make an insurance claim, with experts urging owners to take extra precautions ahead of the busiest claims period of the year.

The study analysed boat insurance claims data to identify the most common causes of claims, the UK regions recording the highest number of incidents, and the months in which owners are most likely to make a claim. The findings shed light on the key risks facing boat owners and offer practical guidance on how to protect vessels during peak boating season.

Key findings:

  • August sees the highest volume of insurance claims for Insure4Boats, with incidents ranging from collisions and accidental damage to theft.
  • Of all claims reported during the period analysed, damage – including underwater damage – was the most common, followed by sinking and storm-related incidents.
  • Regionally, the South East recorded the highest volume of claims, accounting for nearly one in eight (12%) of all incidents reported.

Alison Melia, Private Client Manager at Insure4Boats, said: “Insure4Boats data shows that August is the peak month for boat insurance claims, with incidents reaching their highest point during the busiest period of the boating calendar.

“As more owners take to the water during the summer months, the risk of damage, theft and weather-related incidents naturally increases. Boat owners should use this period to take extra precautions, from checking moorings and monitoring weather forecasts to ensuring security measures are in place when vessels are left unattended.

“Whether you’re new to boating or have years of experience, preparation is key. Before heading out, check your equipment, inspect your vessel for any signs of wear or damage, and make sure you understand the conditions you’ll be navigating in. Taking these steps can help reduce the risk of costly incidents during peak season.”
