Medway Yacht Club has raised £1,410 for Parkinson’s UK during a vibrant and well-supported Commodore’s Day, which brought members together for sailing, celebration and community fundraising.
Sixty five participants took part, including 15 Cruisers who decorated their boats and dressed in naval fancy dress, creating a lively atmosphere across the river and pontoon.
A highlight of the day was the Pull4Parkinson’s tug of war, with five enthusiastic teams competing and helping boost both funds and awareness for people living with Parkinson’s. The club selected Parkinson’s UK as its charity partner for the year, a choice close to Commodore Philip’s heart. Philip spoke openly about his own experience of Parkinson’s, explaining the impact of the condition and the importance of raising awareness. He emphasised that while Parkinson’s affects everyone differently and currently has no cure, staying active, positive and talking openly can make a meaningful difference.
Members described the day as a celebration of everything they value about MYC – community spirit, laughter, colour on the river and shared support. Viv Hill highlighted how the decorated Cruiser Pontoon and the tug of war captured the true heart of the club.
James Beeching, Community Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK, praised the achievement, noting that the impact goes far beyond the impressive fundraising total. The money raised will help improve life for the 166,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the UK, supporting vital research into better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
