British Marine launches new accredited Foundation in Water Safety course

British Marine has co-launched a new Foundation in Water Safety (F-WS) course, providing practical, accredited training designed to help individuals recognise the risks associated with the water environment and understand how to respond safely should an incident occur.

Developed in partnership with experienced water safety specialists Birmingham and Midland Marine Services Ltd, the two-hour, Institute of Search and Technical Rescue (InSTR) course is aimed at anyone whose work or activities bring them into close proximity with inland waterways, rivers, lakes, marinas, ports or coastal environments.

While many people understand the obvious dangers of deep or fast-moving water, the hidden risks of open water are often underestimated. From cold water shock and unstable banks to changing water conditions and ineffective rescue attempts, a lack of awareness can quickly lead to serious incidents.

The Foundation in Water Safety course has been developed to raise awareness of these often-overlooked hazards and introduce practical measures that can help prevent accidents. Through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on instruction, delegates gain a foundation in water safety, learn how to recognise and assess risks, and discover safe, low-risk approaches to assisting others without putting themselves in danger.

The course begins with a classroom-based session introducing the principles of water safety and helping delegates understand how to recognise and assess water-related hazards. Participants learn the fundamentals of water hydrology, including how to ‘read the water’, understand the force and movement of water, and identify common environmental hazards that may not be immediately obvious.

Delegates are also introduced to the correct selection and use of water rescue personal protective equipment (PPE), gaining an understanding of its benefits, limitations and appropriate application. Also covered is the RNLI’s ‘Float to Live’ material; essential knowledge in the event of an unplanned, accidental immersion.

The course explores the potentially life-threatening effects of cold water shock and drowning, explains how water temperature can affect the body’s response, and raises awareness of illnesses associated with contaminated water.

Building on this knowledge, delegates develop an understanding of rescue protocols, unstable ground hazards and the recognised hierarchy of rescue, before taking part in a practical outdoor session demonstrating low-risk rescue techniques.

A key element of the practical training focuses on the nationally recognised “Shout, Reach, Throw – Don’t Go” rescue methodology, reinforcing the importance of assisting a casualty without entering the water and placing yourself at risk.

Approved by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue, the course aims to raise awareness of the dangers of operating near water among the widest possible audience, helping to reduce avoidable accidental drownings through better knowledge, greater confidence and safer decision-making.

Manj Mahey, Head of Training at British Marine, commented: “Whether someone works in a marina, boatyard, waterside business or simply spends time around water as part of their role, understanding the hazards is essential. Many water-related incidents are preventable with the right knowledge and awareness. This new Foundation in Water Safety course gives delegates practical skills and the confidence to recognise risks, respond appropriately and ultimately help create safer working environments.”

The course is delivered by experienced instructors from Birmingham and Midland Marine Services Ltd, recognised leaders in water safety consultancy and training. Drawing on expertise from maritime operations, emergency response and risk management, instructors provide practical, real-world guidance that delegates can immediately apply in the workplace.

Organisations and individuals can now register their interest for courses taking place in July, August or September 2026 at Midland Marines base at Gailey Wharf in Staffordshire, or request a closed course for groups of between six and 12 delegates, either at the training centre or at a customer’s own premises by prior arrangement.

Places are limited to ensure delegates receive a high-quality, interactive learning experience.

The Foundation in Water Safety course costs £55.00 for British Marine members and £65.00 for non-members (plus VAT where applicable).
