The St Edmundsbury Sailing and Canoeing Association (SESCA) has announced its 13th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta, to be held on 28 June at Lackford Lake, Suffolk. Following the 56th Antigua Sailing Week, SESCA’s members are gearing up for their own slice of Caribbean sailing excitement.
Initiated 13 years ago, SESCA’s Regatta was originally conceived as a fun event to coincide with the renowned Sailing Week in the Caribbean. What began as a local celebration quickly gained international recognition when a report of the first Regatta caught the attention of the Antigua Sailing Week Race Committee and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority via a Google news alert. Impressed by SESCA’s initiative, the Tourism Authority graciously stepped in as the event sponsor.
With the generous support of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, the Regatta has become the highlight of SESCA’s sailing and social calendar. After enduring a few years of particularly chilly weather, the event date was moved from April to June, offering participants a chance to enjoy warmer conditions. The organisers are determined to make each year bigger and better, aiming to break the record of 43 boat entries.
This year’s Regatta will feature handicap racing for adult, junior, and disabled sailors in non-trapeze dinghies up to 4.5 metres. The schedule includes a race briefing at 10.30 am, followed by two races before lunch and one in the afternoon for each division.
SESCA is delighted to welcome the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority back as the event sponsor, providing prizes of a suitably Caribbean nature. The Club invites visitors and spectators to join in the festivities, though it kindly requests that no dogs are brought to the site, as it is located within a nature reserve.
