Steamship Shieldhall calls for new volunteers

Southampton’s historic Steamship Shieldhall is inviting local people to come aboard and discover the rewards of volunteering at a special Open Day on 28 November.

The award-winning charity, which operates Europe’s largest operational steamship, is looking for new volunteers to join its Customer Experience team, helping to welcome and look after the thousands of passengers and visitors who step aboard each year. From greeting passengers and assisting during cruises to preparing and serving food in the ship’s galley and helping at special events, there are a wide range of opportunities available. No previous experience is necessary, with full training and support provided by Shieldhall’s experienced volunteer crew.

The charity is particularly keen to hear from people who enjoy meeting others, working as part of a team and have some spare time to give. Whether retired, approaching retirement, working part-time or simply looking for a rewarding new interest, anyone aged 18 or over is welcome.

Come aboard and discover volunteering

On Saturday 28 November, between 11:00am and 1:00pm, Shieldhall will open her doors at Berth 110 in Southampton’s Western Docks for a special Volunteer Open Day. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet existing volunteers, enjoy a guided tour of the historic steamship and hear first-hand about what a typical day aboard Shieldhall involves. The event is completely free, with tea, coffee and biscuits provided. There is no obligation to become a volunteer, and those attending are welcome to simply come along, meet the crew and find out more.

Join an award-winning volunteer team

Steamship Shieldhall is operated and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time to preserve an important part of Britain’s maritime heritage. The charity is a proud recipient of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups in the UK, recognising the outstanding commitment of its volunteers.

Beyond helping to keep this remarkable ship operating, volunteering with Shieldhall offers the chance to make new friends, learn new skills and enjoy memorable experiences both alongside and at sea. With preparations for the 2027 sailing season ahead, the charity hopes to welcome some new faces into its friendly volunteer team.
