British Marine Boat Retailers & Brokers Association (BRBA) and the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) are urging aspiring and developing yacht brokers to secure their place on the Practical Yacht Broker Course, taking place 3–4 November at the Solent Hotel & Spa, Fareham.
Widely recognised as the gold standard in yacht brokerage training, the two-day, in-person course has been designed specifically for those entering the industry or looking to take their career to the next level. Delivered by a team of industry experts, the course provides delegates with the practical knowledge and skills that go beyond what can be learned from textbooks.
Why new and developing brokers should attend
The role of a yacht broker goes far beyond showing clients boats and closing deals. Brokers must navigate a complex landscape of legal, financial, and technical requirements, while managing negotiations and building lasting client relationships. Mistakes can be costly – both financially and reputationally.
The Practical Yacht Broker Course ensures brokers are fully equipped to handle these responsibilities with confidence. Core sessions cover:
- Marine law, VAT, Insurance, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements – ensuring brokers understand the documentation required to pass on good legal title.
- The Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) and compliance requirements.
- Practical selling techniques, conflict management, and negotiation skills to support smooth and successful sales.
- Marketing and digital strategies, including how to use social media to maximise reach and sales.
- Selling new, used, and part-exchange vessels plus understanding client financing options.
- The role of the marine surveyor, Sea Trials, Pre-Purchase Surveys, MCA Coding, and selling commercial vessels.
Delegates will also benefit from a Q&A session with an experienced broker, gaining insider knowledge from someone with decades of practical industry experience.
To complement the training, the course also includes a networking dinner, giving participants the chance to build valuable industry connections. Every delegate will leave with CPD-accredited certification, enhancing professional credibility from day one.
Alastair Walton, Chair of the BRBA commented: “For anyone starting out or looking to progress their career in yacht brokerage, this course is invaluable. It provides essential skills, builds confidence, and raises professional standards across the industry.”
While Karen Wilson, CEO of ABYA, added: “The Practical Yacht Broker Course gives brokers the tools and understanding to do the job properly – with professionalism, accuracy, and integrity. It’s a must for those serious about their future in yacht sales.”
