Falmouth Harbour to manage race marks for local sailing clubs

Falmouth Harbour and the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association (PoFSA) have announced a new partnership for the management of seasonal race marks in the best way for events, safety and the environment.

Under the new agreement Falmouth Harbour will lay 16 race marks in Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads before the start of the main sailing season and retrieve them at the end – on behalf of the six sailing clubs that organise more than 300 sailing events each year, which are represented by PoFSA.

The yellow marks – each sponsored by local businesses – are used, along with navigation marks, by sailing event organisers to set challenging and varied race-courses to suit different wind and sea conditions.

PoFSA Chair Gaye Slater says, “The high quality of racing in Falmouth not only benefits local sailors but attracts visitors from other parts of the UK and abroad to some of the largest and most exciting sailing events in the country.”

PoFSA Sponsorship coordinator Tim Sherratt adds, “This partnership with Falmouth Harbour is a really positive move and a great example of FH’s practical support for sailing in the harbour. We’re fortunate to have such great relationships with our sponsors and supporters in the business and local communities.”

Falmouth Harbour has the marine expertise and resources to lay and recover seasonal race marks in a practical way that supports local clubs – in the same way as the FH team manages its 600 moorings for its leisure and commercial activities.

Miles Carden, Falmouth Harbour CEO, says, “We’re really pleased to be working with PoFSA to help deliver high-quality sailing within the harbour. By supporting our local clubs we’re also helping to attract visiting sailors to our waters and maintain Falmouth’s reputation as a national leading sailing venue.

“Just as important, this partnership approach ensures on-the-water activities are managed in the best, safest ways to protect the harbour’s sensitive environments.”
