This month we are in East Sussex at the popular Brighton Marina.
Brighton Marina is set against a backdrop of white cliffs just half a mile east of the historic city of Brighton in East Sussex. The UK’s largest marina, with more than 1,300 berths and a full-service boatyard, it offers open sea access and is the perfect starting point for a trip to France.
It is set in a bustling cosmopolitan area, framed by restaurants, waterside apartments and a Malmaison hotel. The marina boasts of an array of entertainment options available on and off the water, with a cinema, bowling and golf complexes and a David Lloyd gym.
FACILITIES & BERTHING
The professional and friendly team welcomes boats of all sizes, including smaller craft; a 6m boat can berth year-round at Brighton Marina from just £265 per month. Larger boats are also welcome.
The marina has a dedicated visitors’ area, making it a great rest point on longer journeys. With its high-quality facilities, yacht club, fuel pontoon, quality boatyard and a well-stocked chandlery, boaters have everything they need close at hand.
The boatyard at Brighton sits at the far north-eastern corner of the site, in the inner part of the marina, accessed by lock gates. The yard is conveniently close to the marine trades centre, which houses a comprehensive selection of marine services. Road access is across the lock bridge, which has a 60-tonne capacity and a width of 4.85m.
The boatyard’s high-quality equipment includes a 60-tonne boat hoist and a jib crane for mast and engine lifts. There is a remote boat mover and boat parker which can haul up to 25 tonnes and a 2.5-tonne forklift. Brighton’s yard security is also second to none.

Brighton Marina is well connected and conveniently located, with direct train routes to London taking less than hour, and Gatwick airport just 30 miles away. By sea it is easy to find; the entrance lies between the marina’s east and west breakwater arms – buoyed by red and green markers. At night, the breakwater lights are visible up to six miles away. Staff are available 24/7 to assist and welcome visitors into the marina, but do allow plenty of time to radio on VHF 80 for instructions before heading towards the marina’s breakwaters. It is also recommended to check the local notice to mariners when planning your journey.
CRUISING
Brighton Marina is a great starting point for exploring the South Coast or a trip across the Channel to the continent, with the yacht club regularly organising cruises across to Dieppe. To the east, you can visit Eastbourne or enjoy the quieter anchorages of Rottingdean and Saltdean. Out of the marina you will find ample opportunity for catching different varieties of fish all year: cod and squid in the winter season, plaice in the spring and seabass in the summer. Close to the marina you can also find wreck, reef and mixed ground fishing, making it ideal for keen sea anglers.
If you join the marina as an annual berthing customer, you will have access to the whole Premier Marinas group and can easily use your visitor nights to head around to the West Sussex coastline and stay at Chichester Marina before heading into the Solent.
OUT AND ABOUT
Brighton is an incredible blend of cosmopolitan city and coastal charm, with plenty of independent restaurants and unique shops mixed with well-known high-street brands. You wil find a bursting entertainment scene, with venues including the Brighton Dome, Brighton Centre and Brighton Music Hall.
Across the summer the city’s beachfront comes alive with well-known musicians and festivals which can be enjoyed from the water. This year artists included Fatboy Slim, Madness and Maccabees.
Boaters can enjoy exploring the surrounding waters, before anchoring between the marina and the Palace Pier with the music on the beach providing the perfect soundtrack to watch the setting sun.
Back on land at the marina you can find the Brighton Marina Yacht Club restaurant, The Clubhouse, which offers light bites and hearty meals, and on a Sunday the traditional roast dinner complete with sticky toffee pudding.
