Marina Port de Mallorca held a marine conservation event featuring two parallel initiatives aimed at protecting the environment: a seabed clean-up with Eco Projects Mallorca and the donation of a Mr Turbino from the Recyclamer Association, aimed at supporting future waste collection efforts by Eco Projects in coastal areas.
A team of specialist divers from Eco Projects Mallorca spent the whole morning locating and removing waste that had built up on the seabed beneath Pontoon A at Marina Port de Mallorca. This operation came on top of the annual clean-up of the water surface, during which large items such as shopping trolleys and even rubbish bins are removed. On this occasion, the divers collected around 250kg of smaller items of waste, including wood, metal objects, tyres and other materials.
Removing this waste provided a first-hand insight into the objects and materials that end up down on the seabed, underlining the importance of regularly conducting this type of action to prevent build-up and minimise environmental impact.
The event also built on Marina Port de Mallorca’s partnership with Recyclamer, with the donation of a Mr Turbino to Eco Projects Mallorca for its regular beach and coastal clean-ups. This tool, recently honoured with the Grand Prix du Concours Lépine in Paris and the INPI Innovation Award, is an underwater robot that vacuums up plastic waste while it collects, measures and maps debris, making clean-up operations more traceable, transparent and participatory.
Thanks to initiatives like these, Marina Port de Mallorca continues to promote activities that combine hands-on action, awareness-raising and partnerships with specialist organisations, all with a view to protecting the Mediterranean.
