A practical training programme helping people move into high-demand marine careers is preparing to launch its fifth cohort, after supporting nearly 50 people to train as marine electricians across the Solent.
Starting on 5 September, the Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamp gives eligible adults aged 19+ a fast, focused route into specialist marine electrical skills, while helping employers recruit new talent and upskill existing staff. Funded through the Government’s Skills Bootcamp initiative and delivered locally through the Solent Growth Partnership, the programme has been developed with industry experts and is delivered with Fareport Training.
Owen Davies, founder of BMTA, said: “When we first designed this course, we set out to create a practical route into the marine sector that worked for both learners and employers. To now be approaching our fifth cohort, with nearly 50 people already trained, is a huge milestone.
“I think the success of the Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamp comes from the fact it has been co-designed with industry from the start. We have listened to employers, worked with specialist partners and built the training around the skills the sector actually needs. The demand for marine electricians is real, and the opportunities across the Solent are only growing.”
The Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamp is supported by partners including Latitude Recruitment and Maritime Solent, alongside employers who have used the programme to upskill their teams, including Berthon Boats and Griffon Marine.
Registrations are now open to eligible people living or working in the Solent region, particularly those with electrical, mechanical, engineering or similar practical backgrounds. The opportunity is open to individuals looking to move into a practical marine career, as well as employers who want to recruit new talent or address skills gaps within their teams. Self-employed participants can train fully funded, SMEs contribute 10% of the course cost, and large employers with 250 or more employees contribute 30%.
