New GreenSeas Trust Installation in Weymouth Targets Marine Plastic at Source

Weymouth has taken a proactive step in tackling marine plastic pollution with the successful installation of its first BinForGreenSeas unit on the town’s busy seafront.

The new recycling facility, located on the promenade opposite Rossi’s near the Jubilee Clock, was officially unveiled on 2 April by the Mayor of Weymouth, Councillor Caroline Nickinson and Fazilette Khan MBE, Founder of GreenSeas Trust.

Designed to intercept plastic waste before it reaches the marine environment, the new installation is the 24th BinForGreenSeas unit to be deployed across the UK. It forms part of a growing nationwide effort to address marine pollution at source by encouraging responsible disposal in high-footfall coastal locations.

Delivered in partnership with Weymouth Town Council, the initiative aims to influence behaviour among both residents and visitors, reinforcing the connection between everyday waste disposal and ocean health.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, said: “I am proud to cut the ribbon to mark the official unveiling of this brand-new recycling facility in Weymouth. It is important to support such a worthwhile cause that will help to keep our town clean. There are other bins and recycling facilities in place further along the seafront, and the addition of this eye-catching bin towards the Jubilee Clock area is designed to make people stop and look. Having it there is a reminder to tourists and locals to responsibly dispose of their plastic waste and prevent it ending up on our beautiful beach or floating out to sea.”

Fazilette Khan, Founder of The GreenSeas Trust, added: “Weymouth’s seafront is the perfect place for a BinForGreenSeas, and we’re thrilled the Council has made this commitment. It sends a clear message that protecting our oceans starts on our streets, with both residents and visitors playing their part. Every bottle captured here is one less polluting our seas, and that’s how real change begins, with one simple action at a time.”

The BinForGreenSeas campaign continues to expand across key coastal and riverside locations, using prominent, purpose-designed recycling points to both capture plastic waste and raise awareness of the wider environmental challenge.
