Buying Epoxy
(0 votes, average 0 out of 5)

Epoxy is such a useful substance that on many occasions you would be all at sea without it. Filling, securing, fairing and general small boat repairs are all possible with a small amount of epoxy, but buying the right product for the right job is crucial.
bm_0809_test_1997Epoxy is most widely available as a resin (thick liquid) or paste. Either buy the resin with some filler powder to thicken when required, or buy the paste type with the hardener if preferred. Perhaps the best known brand for general use is Araldite and for boating related uses, the West system.

1. Use the right type for the job.

2. Buy a product with a good date life. When buying any epoxy the use-by date is crucial; stick to the date rigidly for problem free use.

3. Buy a liquid epoxy and filler, and you can have both products ready for immediate use when required.

4. Ensure a good mix consistency between hardener and epoxy, adhering to the workable times of the product, as well as temperature and humidity requirements.

5. Polyester is also a resin used for boat related repairs, but it lacks the strength of epoxy. It is easy to confuse the two.6. Essential supplies to go with the epoxy are rubber gloves, mixing sticks and small mixing containers.
