On Sunday ITV’s Surprise, Surprise will feature Coxswain Dave Steenvoorden from Humber Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) receiving the surprise of his life from a special celebrity guest.
Humber RNLI crew member Tom Ward, who nominated his colleague, explained, "Dave has been part of the Humber crew for over 22 years and in that time he has taken part in many notable rescues and has saved several lives. When I heard that ITV was looking for nominations for their new series of Surprise, Surprise, I thought that Dave would be the ideal person to receive a special treat in recognition of his loyal service to the RNLI."
The filming took place at the charity’s lifeboat station at Spurn Point, East Yorkshire in early October under the ruse that the crew would feature in a documentary about Britain’s rescue services.
"I’m really pleased that the surprise was such a success and I would like to thank my fellow crew members and Dave’s family and friends for keeping everything under wraps."
Dave, who believed that he and the crew were taking part in a training exercise featuring a ‘mock’ rescue at sea, explained, "The crew were acting slightly suspiciously in the weeks prior to filming. Tom kept sneaking into my office and checking the station rotas but I never suspected such a lovely surprise was heading my way. When the exercise turned into a rescue with a ‘hidden extra’, I was blown away. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience which I will never forget."
