Entries have opened for Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, one of the longest-running events in British sporting history.
This year’s ‘Best of British’ themed event takes place from the 11-18 August, later than normal as a result of the Olympic Games. The closing ceremony of the Games will be shown on big screens throughout Cowes on 12 August, coinciding with special Family Day activities.
Highlights for this year’s event include a ‘Best of British’ crew party on 17 August, hosted by official event charity, Toe in the Water; plus chances to see some of our Olympic sailing heroes in Cowes towards the end of the week. Following the announcement that Aberdeen Asset Management is to extend its sponsorship of the event to 2015, the company is introducing a brand new initiative in 2012 to support young crews. The first 10 crews to enter consisting entirely of under 25-year-old sailors will be eligible for assistance from Aberdeen with their entry fee to the regatta. Crews will also receive free crew kit and have the chance to compete for the newly introduced Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy.

On the afternoon of Sunday 3 June 2012, up to a thousand boats will muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty The Queen to take part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. During the afternoon, the Pageant will travel downstream from Putney through central London to Tower Bridge before dispersing at Greenwich. Being a Royal celebration there are limited commercial opportunities but, having spoken with the event organisers, the British Marine Federation say that:
• All spaces for the flotilla have been filled. There is a long waiting list, should any existing boats drop out
• There are a number of hospitality boat experiences available from varying prices as part of the Pageant

Following the success of the first Sandbanks Boat Show last year, Salterns Marina will once again will host and organise the show this year. What's more they've added an an extra day with the event running from Friday 11th - Sunday 13th May. Not only is entrance free, but many of the top brands will be exhibiting including over 70 boats from the likes of Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Targa, Boston Whaler, Jeanneau, Nimbus, Cranchi, Greenline Hybrid, Beneteau, Goldfish Boat, Hardy, Windy, Karnic and Searay. Not to mention kit, insurance and the RNLI offering free sea safety advice including a lifejacket clinic.
This three day show is being organised and generously supported by Salterns Marina in Dorset. Russell Hayden of Salterns says, “This ‘boutique’ style boat show has been truly welcomed by the marine industry; main dealers, manufacturers, associated companies the press and visitors alike. This time last year we were geared up to attend the Liverpool Boat Show and for whatever reason it was shelved. In response to this we decided to organise our own event with only a few weeks to do it in. With great support, hard work and determination we achieved something very special and the result was a fun, relaxed show where deals were made. We can only build on this achievement for this year and look forward to bringing you an even better show at the beginning of the boating season.”
